How this test differs from the exam

  • The new HSK 1 paper has 40 questions: 20 listening and 20 reading. This one has 30: five for each reading part and ten by ear.
  • The listening here is single words. The exam also plays phrases and short dialogues, which this test doesn't have yet.
  • The questions are ours, not from official papers. So is the 60 % pass mark: the new exam hasn't published one for its first levels.

About the HSK 1 exam

How many questions are on the HSK 1 exam?

In the new format, used from 13 December 2026, the paper has 40 questions: 20 listening and 20 reading, all multiple choice. It takes about 40 minutes. There is no writing at level 1.

How many words do I need for HSK 1?

The new HSK 1 exam tests 300 words. The 2021 standard, which many textbooks and apps follow, puts 500 words at level 1; the old exam had 150. Baozi teaches the 500 words of the 2021 standard.

What is the HSK 1 pass mark?

On the old HSK 1 you needed 120 points out of 200. The new exam hasn't published a pass mark for its first levels yet. This test uses 60 %.

Is this a real exam paper?

No. We wrote the questions in the new exam's format from HSK 1 words and checked them the way the app's exercises are checked. Official papers belong to the exam's organisers.

Do I need to sign up?

No. The test runs on this page and your answers aren't sent anywhere.
