Questions and answers

What is a chengyu?

A set phrase of four characters, often from an old fable or poem: 守株待兔 “guard the stump, waiting for a hare” — to hope for luck instead of working. There are thousands; a few hundred are in everyday use.

Do chengyu come up in the HSK?

From HSK 4–5 they appear in texts and questions, and from HSK 6 all the time. Start with the most common ones, like those here.

How should I learn chengyu?

With their story and an example: it makes the meaning stick, since it rarely matches the literal words. Say them aloud — four toned syllables are good speaking practice.
