地: how it's done

adj + 地 + verb

Three “de”s: 的 comes before a noun (我的书), 地 before a verb, 得 after a verb (说得好). 地 turns an adjective into “how”: 高兴地说, “said happily”.

Examples

  • 孩子好奇地看着我。 Háizi hàoqí de kàn zhe wǒ. The child looks at me curiously.
  • 大家认真地听。 Dàjiā rènzhēn de tīng. Everyone listens carefully.
  • 他紧张地回答。 Tā jǐnzhāng de huídá. He answered nervously.
