比较, 相当: “fairly”, “quite”
比较 / 相当 + adj
比较 + adjective is “fairly”: 比较冷 is coolish, less than 很冷. 相当 is “quite”, a notch stronger. Don't confuse it with 比 in comparisons: 他比我高, “he is taller than me”.
Examples
- 北京的冬天比较冷。 Běijīng de dōngtiān bǐjiào lěng. Winters in Beijing are fairly cold.
- 这个办法比较麻烦。 Zhège bànfǎ bǐjiào máfan. This method is fairly troublesome.
- 这个问题相当难。 Zhège wèntí xiāngdāng nán. This question is quite hard.
