上来, 下去…: direction after the verb

verb + 上 / 下 + 来 / 去

A direction can follow the verb: 上 (up) or 下 (down) plus 来 or 去. 来 means toward the speaker, 去 away from them: someone coming down to you is 下来, someone going up away from you is 上去.

Examples

  • 他从楼上下来了。 Tā cóng lóushàng xiàlái le. He came down from upstairs.
  • 我们爬上去吧。 Wǒmen pá shàngqù ba. Let's climb up.
  • 他跑下去了。 Tā pǎo xiàqù le. He ran down.
