儿 is not a separate syllable
小孩儿 xiǎoháir
At the end of a word 儿 is not a syllable of its own: it curls the sound before it — xiǎoháir, not xiǎo-hái-er. It's the same in 这儿, 哪儿, 玩儿. Tap a word to hear it.
