几 and 多少: how many
几 + 个 + noun · 多少 + noun
几 asks about a small number (up to about ten) and always needs a measure word: 几个朋友. 多少 works for any amount, and the measure word is optional: 多少人. For a child's age, ask 几岁.
Examples
- 你有几个朋友？ Nǐ yǒu jǐ ge péngyou? How many friends do you have?
- 你们有多少人？ Nǐmen yǒu duōshao rén? How many of you are there?
- 他几岁？ Tā jǐ suì? How old is he?
