离: away from (distance)

离 links two points and says how far apart they are: 我家离学校很远. It works for time too: 离春节还有三天 “three days until the festival”. 从 is different: it says where a movement starts.

Examples

• 我家离学校很远。 Wǒ jiā lí xuéxiào hěn yuǎn. My home is far from school.
• 学校离这儿不远。 Xuéxiào lí zhèr bù yuǎn. The school isn't far from here.
• 离春节还有三天。 Lí Chūnjié hái yǒu sān tiān. There are three days left until the Spring Festival.
