不如: not as good as · why not…

A 不如 B + adj · 不如 + action

A 不如 B means “A is not as good as B”: 走路不如骑车快. It is gentler than 没有 (我的汉语没有他好). Before an action, 不如 means “we'd better”: 不如坐地铁去.

Examples

  • 走路不如骑车快。 Zǒulù bùrú qíchē kuài. Walking isn't as fast as cycling.
  • 我的汉语不如他好。 Wǒ de Hànyǔ bùrú tā hǎo. My Chinese isn't as good as his.
  • 我们不如坐地铁去吧。 Wǒmen bùrú zuò dìtiě qù ba. We'd better take the subway.
