Grammar · Chapter 3
的 without a noun: the green one, mine
绿色的 · 我的 · 你的
When it is clear what you mean, the noun after 的 is dropped: 我要绿色的 “I'd like the green one”, 那个是你的 “that one is yours”. Without 的, a colour stays just a colour word, not a thing.
Examples
- 我要绿色的。 Wǒ yào lǜsè de. I'd like the green one.
- 你的鞋是什么颜色的? Nǐ de xié shì shénme yánsè de? What colour are your shoes?
- 这个杯子是我的,那个是你的。 Zhège bēizi shì wǒ de, nàge shì nǐ de. This cup is mine, and that one is yours.
