难以: the written 'hard to'

难以 + verb · = 很难 + verb

难以 + verb is 'hard to do': 难以相信, 难以解决. It's the written form of 很难. The verb after it usually has two syllables, and what is hard to solve or grasp moves to the front: 这个问题难以解决. Don't put 很 before 难以.

Examples

  • 我难以相信。 Wǒ nányǐ xiāngxìn. I find it hard to believe.
  • 这个问题难以解决。 Zhège wèntí nányǐ jiějué. This problem is hard to solve.
  • 他的话让人难以理解。 Tā de huà ràng rén nányǐ lǐjiě. What he says is hard to understand.
