Pinyin letters don't sound like English. x is like “sh” said with a smile, q like the “ch” in “cheese”, j like the “j” in “jeep”, all three with the tongue low. zh, ch and sh are said with the tongue curled back; r is close to the “s” in “pleasure”. Tap a word to hear it.
