是: A is B
A 是 B · A 不是 B
是 joins two nouns: “I am a student”. “Not” is 不 in front of it. 是 never goes before an adjective: “I'm fine” is 我很好, not 我是好.
Examples
- 我是学生。 Wǒ shì xuésheng. I'm a student.
- 他不是老师。 Tā bú shì lǎoshī. He isn't a teacher.
- 她是我的朋友。 Tā shì wǒ de péngyou. She is my friend.
