倍: times as much
A 是 B 的 X 倍 · A 比 B 多一倍
A 是 B 的两倍: A is twice B. With 比 you count what's added: 多一倍, “one more of the same”, which is also twice as much. So “twice as many” is 多一倍; 多两倍 already means three times.
Examples
- 价钱贵一倍。 Jiàqián guì yí bèi. It costs twice as much.
- 今年的学生是去年的两倍。 Jīnnián de xuésheng shì qùnián de liǎng bèi. There are twice as many students this year as last year.
- 我们公司的人比去年多了一倍。 Wǒmen gōngsī de rén bǐ qùnián duō le yí bèi. Our company has twice as many people as last year.
