Grammar · Chapter 23
听得懂 and 听不懂: can or can't
verb + 得 / 不 + 懂
Between the verb and its result, 得 means “it works” and 不 means “it doesn't”: 听得懂 “can follow by ear”, 听不懂 “can't”. That is about ability. 没听懂 means “didn't understand (that time)”.
Examples
- 老师说得太快,我听不懂。 Lǎoshī shuō de tài kuài, wǒ tīngbudǒng. The teacher speaks too fast, so I can't follow.
- 这个字你看得懂吗? Zhège zì nǐ kàndedǒng ma? Can you make out this character?
- 他说的我听得懂。 Tā shuō de wǒ tīngdedǒng. I can understand what he says.
