Grammar · Chapter 24

因为…所以…: because…, so…

因为 reason,所以 result

因为 is “because”, 所以 is “so”. Where one word is enough in English, Chinese often uses both: 因为他忙,所以没来. One of them alone is fine too. Answering “why?”, use 因为 only: 因为我不饿.

Examples

  • 因为下雨,所以我们不去公园了。 Yīnwèi xià yǔ, suǒyǐ wǒmen bú qù gōngyuán le. Because it's raining, we won't go to the park.
  • 因为他很忙,所以没来。 Yīnwèi tā hěn máng, suǒyǐ méi lái. He's very busy, so he didn't come.
  • 你怎么没吃?因为我不饿。 Nǐ zěnme méi chī? Yīnwèi wǒ bú è. Why aren't you eating? Because I'm not hungry.
