使: to make someone feel or be

A 使 B + adjective

使 means “bring it about that someone is…”: 音乐使我开心, “music makes me happy”. The subject is a cause (a thing, news, an event), not someone acting on purpose. In speech people use 让 for the same; “make” here is never 做.

Examples

  • 音乐使我开心。 Yīnyuè shǐ wǒ kāixīn. Music makes me happy.
  • 这件事使他很生气。 Zhè jiàn shì shǐ tā hěn shēngqì. This made him very angry.
  • 这个消息使大家很高兴。 Zhège xiāoxi shǐ dàjiā hěn gāoxìng. The news made everyone happy.
