…的时候: when
小时候 · verb + 的时候
时候 means “the moment”. An action + 的时候 means “when…”: 你来的时候. That part opens the sentence, before the main verb: 我小时候住在北京, not 我住在北京小时候.
Examples
- 我小时候住在北京。 Wǒ xiǎoshíhou zhù zài Běijīng. As a child, I lived in Beijing.
- 妈妈工作的时候，我在家看书。 Māma gōngzuò de shíhou, wǒ zài jiā kàn shū. When Mom is at work, I read at home.
- 你来的时候，我不在家。 Nǐ lái de shíhou, wǒ bú zài jiā. When you came, I wasn't home.
