反倒 and 反之: on the contrary

A 反倒 B · A 就 B,反之 C

反倒 introduces an outcome against expectation, inside one sentence: 吃了药以后,病没好,反倒更难受了 (often with 更). 反之 is the written 'conversely': after a comma it flips the same relation — 价格低买的人就多,反之就少.

Examples

  • 吃了药以后,病没好,反倒更难受了。 Chī le yào yǐhòu, bìng méi hǎo, fǎndào gèng nánshòu le. After the medicine the illness didn't clear up — if anything, it got worse.
  • 价格低买的人就多,反之就少。 Jiàgé dī mǎi de rén jiù duō, fǎnzhī jiù shǎo. When the price is low many people buy; the other way round, few do.
  • 打了针反倒更疼了。 Dǎ le zhēn, fǎndào gèng téng le. The injection only made the pain sharper.
