Grammar · Chapter 9

借 and 借给: borrow and lend

借 = borrow · 借给 = lend · 送给 / 交给

借 is “to borrow”, 借给 is “to lend”: add 给 and the direction flips. 送给 “give as a gift” and 交给 “hand over” work the same: 这个送给你. The person who receives comes after 给.

Examples

  • 他借给我一本书。 Tā jiè gěi wǒ yì běn shū. He lent me a book.
  • 我跟他借了一本书。 Wǒ gēn tā jiè le yì běn shū. I borrowed a book from him.
  • 这个送给你。 Zhège sòng gěi nǐ. This is a gift for you.
