却 is “and yet”, when the second part goes against what you'd expect. It's an adverb: it comes after the subject, right before the verb, not at the start like 但是: 他却不想, not 却他不想. The two can go together: 但是他却…

Examples

  • 我想去却没钱。 Wǒ xiǎng qù què méi qián. I want to go, but I have no money.
  • 天气很好,他却不想出去。 Tiānqì hěn hǎo, tā què bù xiǎng chūqu. The weather is lovely, yet he doesn't want to go out.
