舍不得 and 舍得: can't bear to, can bring oneself to

舍不得 + person / thing / verb · 舍得 + verb

舍不得 is 'can't bear to': to part with someone, spend money, throw something away. 我舍不得你 is 'I don't want to leave you'. 舍得 is its opposite, 'willing to give up', and usually turns up in questions: 你舍得走吗? Not 可惜, which means 'what a pity'.

Examples

  • 我舍不得你。 Wǒ shěbude nǐ. I can't bear to part with you.
  • 她舍不得花钱。 Tā shěbude huā qián. She hates to spend money.
  • 你舍得走吗? Nǐ shěde zǒu ma? Can you bring yourself to leave?
