又, 再, 还: “again” and “still”
又 — happened again · 再 — will happen again · 还 — still
“Again” comes in two kinds. 又 is a repeat that has already happened: 他又赢了. 再 is a repeat still to come: 我们再比一次. 还 means “still”: 他还在跑步. Using 再 for the past is the usual slip.
Examples
- 他昨天赢了,今天又赢了。 Tā zuótiān yíng le, jīntiān yòu yíng le. He won yesterday and won again today.
- 明天我们再比赛一次。 Míngtiān wǒmen zài bǐsài yí cì. Tomorrow we'll play once more.
- 他还在跑步。 Tā hái zài pǎobù. He is still running.
