Grammar · Chapter 59
愈…愈…: written “the more…, the more…”
A 愈 X,B 愈 Y (= A 越 X,B 越 Y)
愈…愈… is the written version of 越…越…: 天气愈冷,我愈怀念家里那碗热汤. Each trait gets its own 愈,so 'the more, the more' is read at once. Articles and essays write it this way; in speech people still say 越…越…, and 愈 makes it formal.
Examples
- 天气愈冷,我愈怀念家里那碗热汤。 Tiānqì yù lěng, wǒ yù huáiniàn jiā lǐ nà wǎn rè tāng. The colder the weather gets, the more I miss that bowl of hot soup at home.
- 这本小说愈读到后面,愈让人放不下手。 Zhè běn xiǎoshuō yù dú dào hòumiàn, yù ràng rén fàng bu xià shǒu. The further you read into this novel, the harder it is to put down.
- 愈往上爬,风愈大。 Yù wǎng shàng pá, fēng yù dà. The higher you climb, the stronger the wind.
