且 and 况且: moreover

且 is the short written 'moreover': it adds another quality to the first, with a comma between the two: 风景优美,且交通便利. 况且 is 'besides': it brings one more argument behind a decision already made: 天已经黑了,况且还下着雨. Mistake: 且 is hardly ever heard in speech (there it's 而且), and 况且 does not go into a plain list of qualities — it supports a conclusion.
Examples
- 这里风景优美,且交通十分便利。 Zhèlǐ fēngjǐng yōuměi, qiě jiāotōng shífēn biànlì. The scenery here is beautiful, and the transport is also very convenient.
- 他工作认真,且从不抱怨。 Tā gōngzuò rènzhēn, qiě cóngbù bàoyuàn. He works conscientiously and, moreover, never complains.
- 天已经黑了,况且还下着雨,我们别出去了。 Tiān yǐjīng hēi le, kuàngqiě hái xià zhe yǔ, wǒmen bié chūqù le. It's already dark and, besides, it's raining, so let's not go out.
